Calcium
Avonmore Super Milk is a rich source of calcium, an essential nutrient for developing and maintaining healthy bones throughout life.
A 200ml glass of Avonmore Super Milk consumed as part of a balanced diet and active lifestyle provides you with 42% of the recommended daily allowances (RDA) for calcium based on European RDA’s.
Adequate calcium intake is really important during childhood, adolescence and early adulthood to help maximise peak bone mass. Achieving the highest possible peak bone mass is thought to be one of the best ways to reduce the risk of osteoporosis (weakening and thinning of bones) in later life (1). Osteoporosis affects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 50.
Preliminary results from The National Teens’ Food Survey found that 42% of teenage girls do not consume enough calcium as part of their regular diets (2). Recommended dietary allowances for calcium set by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) are higher during the teenage years to help support growth and development (3).
A variety of foods contain calcium but milk and dairy foods are the main sources of calcium in the Irish diet (4). The calcium we consume from milk and dairy foods is easier for the body to use than calcium from other food sources (5).
Adequate vitamin D intake is also important to help the body absorb the calcium consumed. Without adequate vitamin D it is thought the body can consume no more than 15% of the calcium consumed (6).
Enjoy Avonmore Super Milk as part of a healthy balanced diet and active lifestyle.
